Dispose of Your Christmas Tree Sustainably This Year

The holiday season is a time of celebration, and for many people, that includes bringing a Christmas tree into their home to decorate… but once the holiday season is over, it’s important to dispose of your Christmas tree in a way that is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Here are a few tips on how to sustainably dispose of your Christmas tree in the Dallas, Fort Worth area:

  1. Recycle your tree: Many communities offer Christmas tree recycling programs, where the trees are chipped into mulch or used as compost. In fact, our partners at Dallas Parks and Recreation as well as the Keep Dallas Beautiful non-profit both offer a Christmas tree recycling program in which the trees are chipped into mulch and used in local parks.  Contact your local waste management agency to see if this is an option in your area.
  2. Use it as food or habitat for wildlife: If you have a natural area in your yard or nearby, consider leaving your Christmas tree there as a temporary habitat for wildlife. Trees are often sunk into lakes to create habitat for fish. The branches can provide shelter for birds and small animals, and the trunk can be used as a perch for birds. The Dallas Zoo, one of our long-standing clients, offers a Christmas tree recycling program in which the trees are used as food for the animals.
  3. Donate it for erosion control: Some local organizations, such as scouting troops or community groups, may be willing to take your Christmas tree and use it for a project. For example, the trees might be used to create a natural barrier or erosion control in a local park.
  4. Upcycle it: If you’re crafty and have a bit of extra time, you can try upcycling your Christmas tree into something new. For example, you could turn the branches into wreaths or garlands, or use the trunk as a base for a planter or turn it into a set of coasters.
  5. Properly dispose of it: If you don’t have any other options, it’s important to dispose of your Christmas tree properly. Make sure to remove all decorations and lights, and check with your local waste management agency to see if there are any specific guidelines for disposing of Christmas trees. Our landscape maintenance services dispose of all green waste from job sites and turn this into waste. If you are one of our annual maintenance clients, we are happy to collect your Christmas trees during our next visit!

By following these tips, you can ensure that your Christmas tree is disposed of sustainably and in a way that minimizes its impact on the environment. Happy holidays!
